LITTER CONTROL

Most of the litter we remove from the Bayou Vermilion is from roadside litter that has been discarded from vehicles – most of it being styrofoam and plastic.

  • Once this litter is tossed out of car and truck windows it makes its way into the ditches or storm drains, then from there the litter finds its way down coulees, both paved & vegetated.

  • From the coulees, this litter enters into the Bayou Vermilion & eventually makes its way downstream for other parishes to deal with Lafayette's trash.

Our River Patrol crews remove an average of 30 cubic yards of trash every 2 months.

That's enough plastic bottles, bags, aluminum cans, and other types of roadside litter to fill one 18-wheeler full of trash every 2 months!

Our goal is to reduce waterborne debris in the Vermilion to near zero.
You can help by not throwing trash from vehicles.
