| THE ISSUE
The issue is the Vermilion River. We want to improve its vitality, its appearance, its ecology. We want the water to be cleaner. We may never be able to see the river bottom, but we want it to be cleaner. The Vermilion does not exist within a vacuum. It is intricately connected to all that touches it – the land, the air, the weather, the other waterways it intersects, the vegetation, the animals, the people. The issue is the Vermilion River. The issue is also water. The way it transports things easily. The way it rains hard and plentiful -- average annual rainfall is 61 inches per year. The way it does not rain for some long stretches in summer months. The way water carries storm runoff that is degrading our watershed with non-point source pollution – nutrients, sediment, trash, and noxious chemicals. The issue is the Vermilion River. The issue is also people. The way people have built their environment – the homes, offices, and streets. The way people want a cleaner environment and, with some encouragement, will try innovative and easy ways to do their share.
